DRINKING WATER QUALITY
Drinking water quality describes the quality parameters set for drinking water. Despite the truth that every human on this planet needs drinking water to survive and that water may contain many harmful constituents, there are no universally recognized and accepted international standards for drinking water.
Impurities in water and their Sanitary Significance
Biological Impurities in Water: Biological impurities in water are caused by the presence of living organisms. These include algae, protozoa, pathogens, bacteria, viruses, microbes, and parasites along with their cysts (eggs) in contaminated water. The latter are simply called germs, microorganisms that can reproduce at alarming rates.
Colloidal Impurities in Water: Colloidal impurities in water include organic waste products and amino acids. This problem occurs due to contact with suspended matter and elements like sand, rocks and organic matter flowing in rivers, streams and lakes that renders water undrinkable or non-pure.
History of water related diseases
- Water pollution was not a serious problem in a early centuries.
- Population Increased:- The intensity of the water pollution became increasingly worse.
- After the 2nd war:- exhaust from the factories made the water quality worse
- More peoples became getting water related diseases easily.
Types, effects and sources of water pollution
- water is polluted by infectious bacteria, inorganic and organic chemicals and excess heat.
- water pollution is any chemical, biological or physical change in water quality that has a harmful effect on living organisms.
- The WHO estimates that 3.4 million people die prematurely each year from waterborne diseases.
- In the U.S an estimated 1.5 million people a year become ill from infectious agents.
